Mae Helen Rizzo was a single-divorced parent from Canton, Ohio dedicated to raising her daughter in the 30s when divorce was a social stigma. Mrs. Rizzo worked odd jobs, lived in difficult living quarters with her daughter, Rita Antoinette Rizzo, and managed to raise one of the greatest evangelists of our century. At the age of twenty-one Mrs. Rizzo’s daughter joined a convent against her mother’s wishes. The suffering and financial hardship endured by Mrs. Rizzo’s family gave her beautiful daughter the courage and strength to move mountains. Her daughter took the name “Sister Mary Angelica of the Annunciation” and later in life she became known worldwide as Mother Angelica, founder of EWTN.
The Mae Dae Scholarship Program is in honor of Mother Angelica’s mother, Mae Rizzo, for her dedication to the family unit and for the suffering society inflicted upon her family. We want to help other single parents like Mae improve their circumstances through education. Mother Angelica used EWTN to show support for single parents by sharing her story live on TV and helped put an end to the stigma of divorce. Mother Angelica’s message of strength, courage, and unwavering love for Jesus reached billions of people through out her years of service to Christ and we hope to continue the message every year on May Day.
